My name is Ellen Smith and I’m both a registered clinical counsellor in the province of BC and a registered psychotherapist in the province of Ontario. I studied counselling psychology at the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia. More importantly, I’m a mother of two, and am well known for my love of rescuing and rehoming dogs.
I have worked as a professional counsellor since 2009 and have enjoyed many years working with people from all walks of life, including mothers and couples. My experience over the years has shaped me to be the type of counsellor that greatly values the client’s perspective and knowledge in their healing path. It's amazing to me how one flourishes with some guidance and knowledge combined with a safe and open therapeutic relationship.
I live, work and play in Vernon, British Columbia and the traditional and unceded territories of the Syilx, Secwepemc Okanagan peoples.
My training and background is primarily in Cognitive Behavioural Psychology and Person Centered Approach. I find this combination of theoretical knowledge is a nice balance between the development and understanding of strategies with empathy and non judgmental, client centered approach. I appreciate the connection between our thoughts, emotions and behavior, while also understanding the uniqueness of each client’s perspective. I greatly value the need for clients to receive validation and acceptance, while also learning the psychological processes that are in effect and affecting their lives.
Some of my specialties include:
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Eating Disorders and Post Partum Depression
